Rome has a vast number of pensioni (guesthouses) and budget hotels. The city doesn't necessarily have a slow season, so it is always safest to book ahead. There are usually two or three pensioni in one building. The cheap rooms do not have a private bath. Unfortunately, unlike many other European cities, most of Rome's budget accommodations do not come with an included breakfast. Fortunately, cheap cafes are plentiful in Italy's capital city.
There's no place like Rome for gastronomic delights. Authentic pasta, Italian wine, gelato and more can be found at reasonable prices, just follow your nose. If even the cheapest of restaurants still is priced outside your meager travel budget, make due at the local grocery store with a loaf of bread and bottle of Italy's great wine.
Entrance fees can really eat a hole in your discount travel budget. Be sure to check at the ticket office if student discounts are available. A traveler on seriously short purse strings will still be able to enjoy many wonders of Rome. The Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Bocca Della Verita, St Peter's Basilica and every church in the city are free. The Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums are also free on the last Sunday of the month. Be sure to get there early, as the lines are incredibly long.
